Experience:

Pioneer Press, St. Paul, Minnesota; September 2004-May 2008

• Urban life reporter, December 2007 – May 2008
Revealed the quirky sides and serious issues in St. Paul’s neighborhoods. Used multimedia skills to create news videos. Showed how a downtown pub used a chest-level online “bar cam” to film its scantily clad waitresses.

• Washington Co. crime, courts and government reporter, September 2004–December 2007
Cultivated sources to get exclusives, such as an award-winner about a guilt-racked sheriff’s deputy who’d failed to stop a murder. Exposed an anti-Muslim smear campaign against a Forest Lake mayoral candidate. While helping Knight Ridder cover Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, I examined how flooding had destroyed court evidence, potentially enabling some defendants to walk.

Monterey County Herald, Monterey, California; January 1999–August 2004

• General assignment reporter, September 2001 – August 2004
Focused on city hall, courts and investigations. Documented waste in a municipal housing program, prompting the city to reform its practices. Exposed years of inefficiency and mismanagement at the county hospital.

• Education reporter, June 1999 – September 2001
Covered a dozen K-12 school districts and several colleges. Wrote a three-part series that dug into the mysterious death of a local school district finance official and the subsequent financial meltdown of the district. Served as a temporary copy editor beginning January 1999 before switching to reporting.

Knight Ridder Moscow Bureau, December 2003-January 2004

Covered Russian and Georgian elections, features and breaking news as a correspondent on loan from the Monterey County Herald. Analyzed the failure of reformers in the Russian Duma, and covered President Vladimir Putin’s consolidation of power and crackdown on big business.

The Prague Post, Prague, Czech Republic; July 1994–November 1998

• Assistant business editor, May 1996–November 1998
Helped guide business coverage, pinpointing topics of interest to an international audience. Supervised a dozen staff writers, researchers, free-lancers and columnists while writing stories of my own.

• Business/general news reporter, July 1994-May 1996
Wrote stories explaining the country’s post-communist economic and political transformation. Focused on industry, banking, securities and the economy – especially privatization fraud and the Czech banking crisis.
